Fly SGU, Marc Mortenson and Brandi Honey

Welcome to the 641st Meeting of the Rotary Club of Dixie Sunrise!

Fly SGU Presentation

Marc Mortensen from the City of St. George and Brandi Honey from SkyWest Airlines presented the City’s new Fly SGU campaign designed to get visitors and residents to using the St. George Municipal Airport. Commercial air service fares, frequency and type of aircraft are all determined by demand. If we are going to see an increase in flight destinations and times, better fares and jet service in the future we need to support the service we currently have which is six daily flights to Salt Lake City (SLC) and two daily flights to Los Angeles (LAX). Remember, when booking flights to/from St. George always input airport code SGU first!

GSE: St George Update

Welcome to the 640th Meeting of the Rotary Club of Dixie Sunrise!

After a full week hosting Brazilian GSE team from District 4430, we got to have them present their program to our members this morning. They shared Brazil's vital statistics, hopes and dreams.

Their week here included visits to the hospital, schools, courts, law offices, fire stations, and other local businesses. They also enjoyed tours of the Grand Canyon, Zion Park, the Temple Visitor Center, and Pine Valley. We ate and played soccer at the all-clubs banquet one evening, and they presented their program to all three St George Rotary clubs.

...but the highlight of the whole thing was the making of true friendships. It may seem trite to say it, but this fine Brazilian team became lifelong friends to many who participated in GSE this past week. Sending them off was as difficult as sending a trusted old friend away...

GSE: a Giant Leap Across the Grand Canyon

The desert has a beauty that overwhelms the senses, but it is mean. Everything is sharp, venomous, and unforgiving; and the dry heat can sneak the life out of you before you see it coming. Saturday, we made the epic journey into the Mighty Colorado's fiery lair with our Brazilian team. Except for a case of heat exhaustion during the hike down into the canyon, which turned out OK, we survived the deserts mean-ness and had a spectacular trip. From St George to Bar 10 Ranch and Whitmore, to the top of Mt Trumble and the Tuweep overlook, we ran over 200 miles of nasty dirt road.

As the billowing cloud of dust chased our truck along the rugged terrain, Humberto said, "This reminds me of the John Wayne movies I used to watch when I was a kid!"Nearly exhausted from the last ten miles of pounding over what should be an ATV trail, we decide to hike down for a swim in the inviting chilly waters below.
Some of us recharged our batteries in the cool, life giving water below. Some struggled back to the top. After we all re-hydrated, had lunch, and felt rested, we headed back over the top of Mt Trumble toward the Tuweep overlook. The truck was filled with the sounds of singing and laughing all the way.Dinner at Craigo's Pizza in Colorado City, and then home finished off a GREAT 13 hour day! Thanks Humberto, Alan, Renato, Marcio, Suyuri, and Camilla!

Swine Flu Update

Welcome to the 638th meeting of the Rotary Club of Dixie Sunrise!

Novel Influenza A H1N1 (Swine Flu)

H1N1 is a new flu strain we have no immunity against. Fortunately this has been a fairly mild outbreak, and our hope is that it will stay this way even if it reaches pandemic levels. There is currently no vaccine against it although treatment with the anti-viral Tamiflu has shown effectiveness. Most people who have been infected have recovered without hospitalization.
The best way to prevent further spread of this and other illnesses are the tried and true actions of washing hands thoroughly, avoiding touching the facial area, staying home and isolated from others when sick, and covering coughs.

For frequently updated information on H1N1 and other useful information, visit www.swuhealth.org.
